Teachers from the Carroll Independent School District in Southlake, TX recently participated in a training session on the new guidelines for the books they are allowed to have in their classroom libraries to align with the new regulations in the Republican Texas House Bill 3979, and its soon to be updated, Texas Republican Senate Bill 3. They were told that if they had books on the Holocaust, they also needed books with “opposing views” and “other perspectives”. It is crucial that students learn and discuss different perspectives and how and why bad things happen in history – including genocide, war crimes and slavery – in order to better recognize and respond to them. in the future. There is a way to discuss important events in history and learn to think critically from different perspectives. But once that perspective includes placing opposing views on the Holocaust on the same level as (almost) universally accepted truth, America’s public education system has lost the intrigue.October 16, 2021
