School board accepts $20,000 check from Public Education Foundation – Detroit Lakes Tribune
DETROIT LAKES — The Detroit Lakes School Board accepted more than $20,000 from the Detroit Lakes Public Education Foundation (DLPEF) at its monthly meeting on Monday, June 27, 2022.
The council of seven volunteer members allows teachers from kindergarten through high school to purchase enrichment materials for students. Equipment is not within the normal scope of the training budget.
April Thomas is a member of the DLPEF school board and volunteer board. She explained that teachers fill out a form that building supervisors review and help set a budget. From there, the committee meets with teachers to discuss the viability of each application and whether or not funds exist in other grant opportunities.
“Then it’s back to the volunteer member council, which has four or five meetings a year,” Thomas said, noting that they decide which applications to fund.
An example of a grant expense in the past would be the purchase of virtual reality headsets. The teacher allowed the students to put on the headphones and take guided tours of historic buildings or moments in history.
“Teachers come up with amazing ideas,” she said. “For me, it’s the most fun time of the year when the grant proposals come in. I feel like we can put sprinkles on a cupcake the school bought.”
The Detroit Lakes Public Education Foundation began in the early 2000s, and Thomas said the group gave $170,000 to the school to promote excellence in education and improve opportunities for student success.
Thomas explained that funds are raised through fundraisers and donations. Some donations come from educators who request that a certain amount be deducted from their paycheck and directed to the Detroit Lakes Public Education Foundation account.
