Redditor hides BTC worth $100 for 100 years in public library

There’s never a dull day in the land of Bitcoin (BTC). Although the markets are calling for a lull, the Bitcoin creative community still has something to enjoy.

Yesterday, a Redditor by the name of Optimal-Dentistador (henceforth, OD) questioned the longevity of the Bitcoin network with a time-lapse challenge.

In one Publish Done to the Bitcoin subreddit, OD “wrote a letter and also put the private keys for $100 in BTC”. In a private communication with Cointelegraph, they revealed that they “put 0.003 BTC on a new address, put the private and public key with the letter in the envelope, and here we are.”

The once-in-a-lifetime experience was inspired by recent events hosted by the OD City Public Library, which will be kept secret at OD’s request. They told Cointelegraph that in their quote:

“There was an event where you could write something like a letter, poetry or a diary that will be stored for 100 years. If you write personal information on the envelope, they will try to find living relatives at their to give.

OD decided to put “something special” in the time capsule, namely the details of the public and private keys at 0.003 BTC, or about $100 at today’s rate. They told Cointelegraph, “I’m going to tell my family about it”, however, OD also jokes that they might “eventually forget about all this, who knows what will happen in the next few decades”.

The Reddit community was quick to note that while 0.003 BTC may be an insignificant sum in 2022, it could be considered a market-changing amount in a hundred years:

OD was quick to joke that in today’s world, it’s a bit like finding the “Bitfinex hack amount of money” in a letter. The Department of Justice recently seized $3.6 billion as part of the debacle associated with crypto exchange Bitfinex.

Since the letter won’t be opened until 2022, one Redditor, “fontinuos,” said it was “sad to think that all of us will be dead and not see the outcome.” OD agrees that while it’s a fun experience, the end result is “a grim feeling.”

Still, the value of the meme is strong, and OD’s offspring can enjoy the riches. OD signed with Cointelegraph saying, “See you in 2122, ultimate diamond hands :)”
