Now Live Application for Masters Program in Public Education Management
The Broad Center (TBC) at the Yale School of Management has launched the online application for its 14-month Masters in Public Education Management program. Leading to a Masters in Management Studies, the program will prepare early career leaders to amplify their impact in urban school systems from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
TBC at Yale SOM will host an inaugural cohort of about 30 emerging school system leaders in June 2022. A landmark 2019 donation of $ 100 million in 2019 from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation ensures that the Broad Masters is tuition-free.
The master’s program will include five weeks of residency, online sessions, a symposium series and a synthesis project, in addition to a program focused on building the functional skills needed to lead complex organizations, including operations, l data analysis, accounting, performance measurement, organizational design, capital development, innovation and technology. Students retain full-time employment throughout the program, giving them the opportunity to apply skills and lessons learned in the classroom to have an immediate impact on the students and families they serve.
Hanseul Kang, Associate Dean and Executive Director of Anita and Joshua Bekenstein ’80 BA of the Broad Center at Yale SOM, said: “The Broad Master will accelerate the leadership skills and impact of individuals ready to make a difference for their communities. . Anyone who has worked with central school systems offices has seen people whose work is not always very visible, but who make a huge difference in ensuring that the system is focused on serving students and families. We are excited to support these emerging leaders with ideas, tools and frameworks to increase their impact in their current roles and in their future leadership trajectories.
The Yale SOM Broad Center fosters ideas, policies, and leadership to help all students, especially those in underserved communities, learn and thrive. TBC at Yale SOM is the successor to the previously independent Broad Center in Los Angeles. In addition to the Masters in Public Education Management, TBC at Yale SOM also offers the Public Education Leadership Fellowship, a 10-month leadership development program for senior executives in urban public education.
A key tenet of the General Masters in Public Education Management is an emphasis on system inequality and an emphasis on directing equity. Students will leverage the resources and knowledge in the Yale classroom to create innovative solutions to problems faced by school systems that disproportionately serve students of color and historically underfunded communities.
In a December 2019 statement announcing the founding of TBC at Yale SOM, Dean Kerwin K. Charles said the new center is fully aligned with SOM’s mission and values: informed by systems thinking, rigorous analysis and compassion can make a real difference to communities.
“We are deeply grateful to the Broad Foundation for its continued investment in building the strength of leaders working in our country’s urban school systems,” Kang said.
