Morecambe Road school expansion set to go ahead after public consultation
Expansion plans for Morecambe Road School in Lancaster are expected to be approved by cabinet next week, following the completion of a formal consultation.
Lancashire County Council is proposing to expand this special school with the creation of 34 additional places, bringing the school population to 189.
It is proposed that 12 of these 34 places will be created through the development of the satellite offer at the Lancaster and Morecambe College site.
The governing bodies of both contexts are happy and supportive of the proposals, which were originally submitted by Morecambe Road School.
The expansion of Morecambe Road School is part of a wider strategy to improve care for children with special educational needs (SEN) across Lancashire.
Under the current proposals, Morecambe Road School will also be redesignated as a school that caters to the needs of children and young people with generic learning difficulties under the plans. Currently it is a mixed special school for students with moderate learning difficulties.
At its May meeting, the cabinet agreed on a recommendation to launch a formal consultation on the proposals. The formal consultation period included a meeting at Morecambe Road School for all interested parties on June 9. This meeting was attended by a number of parents/guardians, school staff and staff from Lancaster and Morecambe College, as well as a representative from Lancashire County Council. All participants provided positive feedback on the proposals.
On Thursday July 7, the County Council Cabinet will be asked to consider the results of the formal consultation before giving its approval to proceed with the plans.
County Councilor Jayne Rear, member of the Education and Skills Cabinet for Lancashire County Council, said: “The expansion of Morecambe Road School will help ensure there are enough places in schools in the Lancaster and Morecambe area for children and young people in need.
“The exciting proposals to expand satellite provision at Lancaster and Morecambe College will build on existing arrangements and provide more pupils with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to prepare for the age of adult.
“These proposals have the full support of Morecambe Road School and Lancaster and Morecambe College, and have been well received by families during formal consultation.
“Thank you to everyone who has engaged in this important process.”
