MIDDLE CONTINENT PUBLIC LIBRARY EVENTS – The Examiner

The Mid-Continent Public Library offers both in-person and virtual events. Visit mymcpl.org/events for more information.

To access and register for these events, go to www. mymcpl.org/events. You can then click “All Events” at the top or one of the special event groups on the left side of the screen and search for events. If you have questions about how to register or attend an event, call the library at 816-252-7228 and select the technology support option.

If the event is a Zoom event, click on the event and register. An email invitation will be sent to you at the time of the event.

To attend most non-Zoom virtual events, register for the event and at the time of the event there will be a link to the MCPL360 Library Facebook page (or you can navigate to https ://www.facebook.com/mcpl360/ at the time the event is scheduled.)

Note: If you cannot attend a particular program, check if it is repeated or recorded and replayed by checking the “Event Details” listed in the Events Calendar.

This week’s events include the following:

Saturday March 5

• Famous Czech and Slovak Americans: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, 816-252-7228. This is an in-person exhibit highlighting Czech and Slovak immigrants to the United States who contributed to science, politics, sports, and the arts as well as their descendants. This exhibition runs until May 31.

• Guts & Glory: The war train that shaped a nation: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, 816-252-7228. This in-person exhibit marks the 100th anniversary of the Czech and Slovak legions and their rail journey through Siberia during World War I. This exhibition will remain in place until May 31.

• Jim Cosgrove, Mr. Stinky Feet: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Blue Ridge branch. Kansas City award-winning rocker Jim “Mr. Stinky Feet” Cosgrove delivers a concert of original songs and old favorites. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting mymcpl. org/events and search for this program.

• Money tracking for your small business: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Colbern Road branch. If spreadsheets get you down, join this work session to get back to business finance basics. Registration is required and can be completed by visiting mymcpl.org/events and searching for this program.

Monday March 7

• ELL Virtual Classes for Beginners (Zoom): 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Join the English for Beginners class to learn how to communicate at school, at work, or in an emergency. Registration is required and will close 30 minutes before the start of the program.

• Story time for families: 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. These in-person events will be held at the Blue Springs South Branch, 2220 Missouri 7, Blue Springs, (816) 229-3571, and the South Independence Branch, 13700 East 35th St. S., (816 ) 461-2050, at the same time. Registration is required for either program. Listen to stories, sing songs, participate in movement activities and create memories. Designed for children of all ages. Share the experience of early literacy with the whole family.

• History Center Review Group (Zoom): 6:30-8:00 p.m. Bring 2-3 pages of your work to share with the group. Pages should be in standard manuscript format: 12 pt. Font, double-spaced, Times New Roman. Registration is mandatory.

tuesday march 8

At this in-person event, listen to stories, sing songs, participate in movement activities, and make memories together. Designed for children of all ages. Come and share the experience of early literacy with the whole family. Registration is mandatory.

• Decoration for spring: 6:30-7:30 p.m., North Independence Branch, 317 WUS 24, Independence, 816-252-0950. Registration is mandatory.

• Ladies of Laughter: Great Actresses (Zoom): 7:00-8:00 p.m. Early in the comedy and beyond, many top comedians, such as Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball, and Eve Arden, kept the audience laughing. Join film historian Annette Bochenek.

• The secret town of Kansas City: 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Raytown branch, 6131 Raytown Road, Raytown, (816) 353-2052. This program will be in person. Author Anne Kniggendorf shares the secrets of her book Secret Kansas City. Registration is mandatory.

• Start researching your genealogy for free at home: 7-8 p.m., South Independence Branch, 13700 East 35th St S., (816) 461-2050. and the Grain Valley branch on Tuesday, March 22 at 2 p.m. Join international genealogist Kathleen Brandt as she reveals five tips and tricks you can use to create a family tree in your spare time at home. Registration is mandatory.
