the Democratic Party lambasted the idea that parents should have a say in what public schools teach, saying in a Facebook post over the weekend that public education teaches children what society “needs them to know”.
A post Saturday by Michigan Democrats on their official Facebook page criticized parents who want to play a role in what public education teaches their children. The post was deleted on Monday morning after intense criticism.
“I don’t know where this ‘parents-should-control-what-is-taught-in-schools-because-they-are-our-children’ comes from, but parents have the ability to send their children to private school at their own expense if that is what they desire,” the post read.

“The purpose of public education in public schools is not to teach children only what parents want them to learn,” the message from the Michigan Democratic Party continued. “It’s to teach them what society needs them to know. The client of public school is not the parent, but the whole community, the public.”
The Michigan Democratic Party later deleted that post and issued a near-apology.
“We removed a post that ignored the important role parents play — and should play — in Michigan’s public schools. Parents need to have a say in their children’s education, end of story,” a later message said Monday. “The message does not reflect the views of Michigan Democrats and should not be misconstrued as a statement of support from our elected officials or candidates.”
Republicans in the state were highly critical of the Democrats’ initial post.
“Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Democratic Party continue to be in the pockets of teachers unions and are so out of touch with Michiganders that they believe parents should not be involved in their children’s education,” said Michigan GOP communications director Gustavo Portela at Fox News Digital. in a statement Monday.
“Studies have shown time and time again that parental involvement leads to student success,” Portela continued. “Parent involvement is exactly what our students need more than ever after a year of learning loss that will affect them for years to come thanks to the Gretchen Whitmer closures.”
Wolverine State’s GOP also blasted its political rivals in a tweet on Sunday, writing that Democrats are “ready to indoctrinate your children with what ‘society needs them to know’.”
Republican Governors Association (RGA) spokesman Chris Gustafson told Fox News in a statement Monday that Michigan’s Democratic governor needs to take action regarding the position.
“Gretchen Whitmer needs to condemn the Michigan Democratic Party or admit that she thinks teachers’ unions should control public education, not parents,” Gustafson said.
Republican gubernatorial candidate and former Detroit Police Chief James Craig released a statement saying parents are the ‘real actors’ in their children’s education, calling the Democrats’ post ‘shameful’ of Michigan and demonstrating “that they have an indoctrination program, not an education”. .”

That same type of message about public education spelled the end of Democratic Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe’s 2021 campaign against Republican Glenn Youngkin, which was inaugurated on Saturday.
McAuliffe said in a debate that he did not believe parents should tell public schools what to teach their children, in a phrase that defined his campaign.
