Meity news: MeitY will organize a public consultation on proposals to change IT rules
The consultation is likely to be attended by representatives from social media intermediaries, technology policy and other business advocacy groups, cybersecurity experts and privacy activists.
Earlier this month, the IT Department republished draft proposed changes to the country’s technology and social media regulations, which it said would aim to provide “more effective grievance redress”. and to fill “infirmities and gaps” in existing regulations.
The revised notification, which came a week after the withdrawal of a similar project, would respond to the challenges posed by the expansion of the digital ecosystem as well as the shortcomings of the current regulations, in particular “vis-Ã -vis the Big Tech platform,” the ministry had said.
The ministry then gave 30 days to all stakeholders to submit their views on the proposed draft amendments and said a date and time for a formal public consultation would also be announced in due course.
