DICT and DepEd will deploy a public education network
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education and the Department (DepEd) of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) have partnered to establish a Public Education Network (PEN) that links all public schools and National DepEd offices and allows learners wider access to DepEd TV, DepEd Commons and other learning platforms.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones and DICT Secretary Gregorio Honasan II signed two separate memoranda of understanding for PEN last Friday aimed at accelerating digital connectivity of the public school network.
Apart from this, PEN will also connect DepEd offices to governance platforms such as DepEd Enterprise Resource Planning System (DERPS), Learner Information System (LIS), DepEd mobile app. and other partner platforms.
“This monumental collaboration is aligned with President Duterte’s directive during his State of the Nation 2020 (SONA) address. As a result, this is a direct response from DepEd and DICT to address the adverse effects and complications that the pandemic has imposed on basic education, ”said DepEd and DICT in a joint statement. .
One of the signed agreements allows public schools to host common towers, thus accelerating and improving the quality of Internet connectivity services in the country.
“We have made it possible for public schools to be joint tower sites, where telecommunications companies can also build joint towers for their cell sites,” said Emmanuel Rey Caintic, ICT undersecretary for digital.
Caintic said ITCs or telecom operators would pay a rental fee to public schools, which would be used for school maintenance and other running expenses, including internet connectivity costs.
The partnership will also establish the framework for cooperation and collaboration between DepEd and DICT, where DICT helps DepEd increase future satellite capacity for Last Mile schools and provide data transport service using a network fiber optic cables under the GovNet and Microwave towers.
DepEd said coordination with DICT on the PEN project started in April 2020.
