Australia: Committee for Public Education releases video opposing reckless reopening of schools
Tens of thousands of grade 11 and 12 students in Victoria, Australia’s second most populous state, returned to school today for the General Achievement Test (GAT). The premature and dangerous return to on-site learning, imposed by the Andrews State Labor government after months of distance learning, comes amid the highest infection rate of any state or Australian territories since the start of the pandemic. Today’s record 1,763 infections is an increase of over 400 in the past 24 hours.
The return of terminal students and teachers will be followed by a phased return of all the other students in the coming weeks. A similar timeline is underway in New South Wales (NSW) despite continued infections forcing the closure of more than 200 schools in recent months. The dangerous and dangerous reopenings have been approved by the New South Teachers’ Federation (NSWTF) and the Victorian branch of the Australian Education Union (AEU) who have been complicit in all government diktats.
Opposition among teachers, students and parents continues to grow, with reports today in the Melbourne-based newspaper Age newspaper of final year students refusing to return to dangerous classes and government policy ignored by some schools, which offer students online learning.
In this video, CFPE members speak out against the pro-business agenda of the Victorian Labor and Liberal-National NSW governments of ‘living with the virus’, including reopening schools, which is life-threatening for students, educators, parents and the community at large in serious danger.
The video calls on educators to start taking matters into their own hands by creating grassroots security committees to fight for an eradication policy.
The CFPE will issue a full statement on the World Socialist Website tomorrow.
