Amherst Public Library Grand Opening Set for July 11 – Morning Journal
The long-awaited renovated Amherst Public Library, located at 221 Spring Street, will be unveiled July 11 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The grand opening is scheduled for noon and is the culmination of an enormous amount of dedication, work and funds to not only renovate the existing library, but also to add 7,500 square feet to it.
The Amherst Library officially began construction at a groundbreaking ceremony on July 21, 2021, with the project, officials said.
The $5.8 million expansion doubled the size of the current facility which was built in 1906 and has remained a historic cornerstone of the community ever since.
The Amherst Library is one of 111 Carnegie libraries built in Ohio, giving it historic distinction.
In 1976, the library was expanded and has been renovated and remodeled over the years, said Donald Dovala, the library administrator.
The library has long since become too big, hence the idea of an extension.
In 2010, the library applied for funds but the idea was rejected.
In 2020, voters approved a bond issue that will provide $5 million for the project.
The expansion includes the addition of a community hall, an outdoor patio and a drive-thru box to name a few of the new improvements.
The library remains closed until noon, July 11, when it reopens for the grand opening.
The Amherst Public Library is also showcasing Memory Kits, the newest item in its collection, according to a news release.
Studies have shown that keepsakes are a valuable way to boost memory and maintain communication, according to the statement.
“Our memory kits are designed to help our customers engage and facilitate conversations with loved ones who are experiencing memory loss,” the statement read. “Each kit contains flashcards and activity cards with photos and discussion prompts, a themed DVD with short videos, a themed sing-along DVD, and tactile elements to help build cognitive skills.”
Customers can choose from Patriotic Reminisce, Dog Reminisce, Cat Reminisce, Great Outdoors Reminisce, and Summer Reminisce.
Memory kits can be borrowed for up to three weeks with an Amherst Public Library card, according to the release.
